Fike is fortunate to welcome back everyone from last year’s team that finished 20-2 and was East Regional runner-up to state champion Cape Fear. We added some depth to our numbers this year with a freshman who has previous tennis experience. We’ll be sharing her with JV volleyball and should see her play in half our matches. The starting point guard joined us after being cut from varsity volleyball. She’s a great athlete and young lady to have around. We’re going to convert her from pickleball to tennis.
Our team is led by the Adkins twins, Caroline and Kathryn, the defending 3A state doubles champions. The twins have high expectations for their senior year. They have shown the year-round dedication and work ethic every coach loves and are fresh off helping their 18 and under intermediate JTT team to a state championship. Two more of their teammates, Kaden Biamby and Holland Ellis, played JTT this summer. Their 18 and under beginner team was the runner-up in the state tournament.
We’ve averaged seven at practice since we started on Monday afternoon. Like everyone else, I’m working around job schedules, vacations, and multi-sport athletes. It’s good that I’ve learned to be flexible and “chill” as my girls would say. We have been focusing on playing matches, as well as fine tuning strokes during practice. We have a scrimmage with Clayton on August 10 before opening the season on August 14 at Washington.
Wishing good luck and good weather to all!
