Good Saturday Afternoon Coaches,
This is the Week 2 update on the Lady Wildcats. I am sure it would help the voters for each coach to post a weekly or periodic update as the season progresses. You can look at the scores and records in MaxPreps all you want, but that does not always tell the whole story:
We first played conference foe and the #1 ranked 3A Team in the state Wilson Fike last Monday at home. The Lady Demons were as good as advertised and won the match 9-0. They have good depth, a great sister duo at the top, and are already match tough this early in the season. The best singles match of the day came at #6 where Elly Jens lost to Connie Pleasants 6-1, 6-3 in a more competitive match than the score indicated. In doubles the #3 doubles match was also very competitive as we lost that one 8-5! After coming off a loss to #2 4A Wilmington New Hanover, the Fike Ladies were ready to play and it showed.
On Tuesday, we played conference opponent Southern Wayne and played the most complete match of the young season. The Lady Saints have a solid #1 seed with Charity Van Dyke and in a competitive match our #1 Kolleen Tyndall won 6-4, 6-1. From there my 2nd through 6th seed singles players dropped only 3 games combined and all played solid error free tennis. With a 6-0 lead after singles I wanted to let some of my exhibition players experience some match play. We won 2 out of 3 doubles with Charlotte Wood & Bella Drown losing a heartbreaker 9-7 at #1 doubles to the doubles team of Van Dyke & Ally Segura, who were regional qualfiiers last season!
Next week we are scheduled to play 3 matches, at home against conference opponent East Wake on Monday, then at conference opponent SSS on Wednesday, and finally at home against 2A North Johnston on Thursday! Good luck to everyone and looking forward to a break in the heat eventually.
